Lavender Munstead Dwarf is a very attractive plant to bees and other insects. It makes for an excellent cut flower but can also be dried to make Pot Pourri. Grow it in containers, or as a low hedge to soften your pathways, just be sure to plant it somewhere where you can enjoy its beguiling fragrance. This variety grows to a height of 45cm (18"). WHEN TO SOW February to August WHERE TO SOW Under cover sow the seeds into pots or trays on the surface of a good seed compost and then lightly cover with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place at a temperature of 21-25°C (70-75°F) until seeds germinate which usually takes 14-21 days. WHAT TO DO NEXT Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out 23cm (9") apart. Overwinter late summer sowings in a cold frame and plant out the following spring. STORE In airtight jars in dark. DRY Tie in small bunches and hang in an airing cupboard or other warm, dark place. Strip flowers from stems when dry. USE To make lavender bags, pot-pourri and mixed herbs cushions. MEDICINAL The scent of lavender has a calming effect on the nerves. The leaves and flowers make a beneficial tea used to treat headaches, faintness and insomnia lavender makes an attractive and fragrant hedge and its silver/grey colour and formal shape make it an important border plant. HANDY TIP Lavender flowers are edible and can be used in sweet or savoury dishes. Can also make delicious lavender sugar or add to cookies, sorbets, jams or jellies.
