Salad Leaf Beet Bulls Blood
Grow your own tasty colourful salad leaves which are packed full of nutrients.
There is nothing quite as special and rewarding as going out to your own garden and selecting home grown produce to use in your meals. Although primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its dark red leaves, Bulls Blood Beet is now mildly used in baby leaf salads. It provides almost crimson colour leaves with a sweet taste to add to any salad.
WHEN TO SOW March to August
WHERE TO SOW For baby leaves sow thinly in shallow drills 1.5cm (½") deep with 30cm (12") between rows.
WHAT TO DO NEXT Cut leaves from each plant leaving some leaves on each so they re-grow. If you require mature roots, thin the seedlings gradually as they grow to an eventual spacing of 10cm (4"). Do not transplant.
HARVEST April to October
HANDY TIP For micro salads sow every 7 days all year round in trays underglass or on a windowsill and HARVEST as seedlings and use as a garnish. Leave a few outdoor plants to mature and eat the roots like other beetroots.
NUTRITIONAL VALUES Rich in beta-carotene, calcium, iron and folic acid.
