Brussels Sprout Flower Petit Posi
A recent introduction to the vegetable garden, the result of crossing a brussels sprout and curly Kale resulting in a heathy and nutritious vegetable. Tasty small green and purple sprouts with curly leaves ideal for adding to stir fries. What would the Christmas Turkey be without them? The older varieties of Brussels Sprouts have the best flavour, but it is the modern hybrids which have the ability to hold the small tight buttons for a long time on the stem. The older varieties will open and lose their button-like tightness.
WHEN TO SOW March to April
WHERE TO SOW Sow the seeds thinly in trays or two seeds per cell in modules under glass at 13°C. Later sowings can be made into a seed bed in shallow drills 2cm (3/4"") deep in short rows.
WHAT TO DO NEXT As soon as glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves, prick off into trays 5cm (2"") apart or thin modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden off before planting out when about 15cm (6in) tall. Plant in beds 60cm (24in) between plants and 90cm (36in) between the rows. Outdoor sowings should be thinned to 7-10cm (3-4in) apart , then once plants are large enough, lifted and transplanted to their final planting positions, spaced the same as detailed above. HARVEST Small green and purple sprouts with curly leaves from October to December.
HANDY TIP Successive sowings and plantings can extend the cropping period.
