Small winged pods for harvesting small when about 3-4cm long. Cooked whole they have a superb flavour akin to Asparagus. Brilliant scarlet flowers and can be grown with no support. Also known as winged Pea.
WHEN TO SOW Mid-April to Late-May
WHERE TO SOW Make early sowings under cloches and from mid-April direct into open site in drills 2cm (3/4") deep, spacing seed 5cm (2") apart. Space rows 35cm (15") apart .
WHAT TO DO NEXT Protect seed and young seedlings from bird damage by covering with netting. Keep plants weed free throughout the growing season. Pick pods regularly.
HARVEST June to August
HANDY TIP Plants require no staking but pods camouflage well in the foliage so search well. To cook, just top and tail the pods, steam or lightly boil and serve with a knob of butter - delicious!
