RHS Award The first variety to have tolerance to Carrot Fly as it is far less attractive to the egg laying flies. Broad shouldered, stump ended roots with smooth skin and excellent colour. Nantes type for mid-season. Carrot Flyaway was bred to show resistance to carrot fly but unfortunately is not immune to attack . Being such a dry year , carrot fly appear to be about sooner. If only carrot flyaway is grown and if there is carrot fly in the area they will still attack the variety . To overcome this another variety like Early Nantes should be grown alongside , this acts as a sacrificial crop and the Carrot fly will prefer to attack this variety and leave the row of Carrot Flyaway alone. Alternatively carrots should be grown under enviromesh to stop them getting to the crop.

Notes: Do not transplant

WHEN TO SOW April to July

WHERE TO SOW Sow thinly direct into the growing site 2cm (¾"") deep in rows 30cm (12"") apart. If possible sow carefully so that thinning is not necessary .

WHAT TO DO NEXT Carrot fly is attracted by the smell whilst thinning, If you have to thin the seedlings, do so in the evening. Water before thinning and remove all the debris. Do not transplant. Aim for roots 5-7cm (2-3"") apart. Young Carrots can always be pulled alternately to 'thin as you eat'.

MATURITY June to November
