Dark green leafy heads, compact plants with HARVEST time of mid-April onwards. Has the advantage of being suitable for spring sowing for autumn use.
WHEN TO SOW July to August
WHERE TO SOW Sow seed thinly in a prepared seed bed in shallow drills 2cm (3/4") deep. Keep well watered.
WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin the seedlings as they appear to 5cm ( 2in) apart. Once seedlings are 10-15cm (4-6in) tall , transplant to their final growing site spaced 35-40cm (14-16in) apart. Always set the young plants 1.5cm (1/2in) deeper than they were in the seed bed. Keep well watered during hot dry spells.
MATURITY January to March the following year
HANDY TIP Feed plants in early spring with a high nitrogen feed to encourage growth. Pick regularly to prevent all cabbages cropping at the same time.
NUTRITIONAL VALUES Excellent source of vitamin A, C & B. The darkest leaves contain the most nutrients.
