Grass Seed

For over 185 years we have specialised in offering top quality grass seed with a top quality service to back it up. Looking to the future and to continue with this philosphy we are delighted to have formed a close partnership with Oliver Seeds who values very much match our own and whose parent company we have worked together with for many years.

Olivers have the UK’s largest grass testing facility and are dedicated to the future of grass and forage crops so growers can acheive the best from their crop.

Short Term Leys

1 -2 Year Duration

Tornado - Very Fast Growing

TORNADO is based on a persistent, multicut, Westerwold Ryegrass and two Italian Ryegrasses which combine outstanding yield in the establishment year plus extraordinary spring growth and first cut yield.

It can grow very fast; to get the best results it needs to be managed carefully. The relatively open nature of its growth means that cutting or tight rotational grazing best suits the mixture.

If the TORNADO is required for a full 12 months of production or regular, hard, winter grazing, 15.0kg seed rate is recommended. If seedbed conditions are good 12.5kg/acre is adequate, especially if the crop is to be ploughed up after first cut.

TORNADO is also available mixed with WINFRED rape as RAPTOR to produce flexible Summer and Autumn grazing.

  • Top yield potential for both Autumn and Spring production.
  • Excellent potential for grazing and Autumn silage after Winter Barley.
  • Aimed at a duration period of 18 months
  • Very vigorous establishment for sowing after maize.
  • 45% Diploid content for higher dry matter spring silage.
  • Better lamb finishing potential than stubble turnips, with assured re-growth
  • Yield potential 21 tDM/ha in the first year

Sowing Rate 12.5 to 15 kg/acre

Broadsword HiPro - With added clover

A blend of Hybrid and Perennial Ryegrasses with Festulolium and both Red and White Clover for outstanding performance

  • Erect disease resistant and vigorous grasses to compete with Clover
  • Very adaptable and denser than Sabre to enhance grazing performance
  • High sugar levels to aid silage fermentation and palatability
  • Enhanced protein levels and drought resistance for adverse sites
  • Trials show a yield advantage of up to 2 tonnes of DM/ha in the second harvest year compared to no Clover version

Red Clover mixtures for higher protein and reduced nitrogen input. The advantages of Red Clover are not always realised but in summary, offer three times the yield of a large leaved White Clover. This yield comes at a cost however, as the species is not as persistent as White Clover and is therefore best used in 2-4 year leys. A long, penetrating tap root allows Red Clover to withstand drought and be suited to lighter soils.

Herbal Leys & Meadow Mixes

It is important to consider what will grow and what will provide the required end product.

Sometimes ryegrass alone will be unable to meet the need of the farm and the animals so something else is required. The Landmark Range of mixtures makes use of the excellent properties found within other species and have proven to be increasingly popular in recent years

Extreme - Dual purpose on adverse sites

A blend of late Perennial Ryegrass, Festulolium, Cocksfoot, Meadow Fescue and Timothy with White Clover and Birdsfoot Trefoil

  • Good mid-season potential from all species
  • Ryegrass chosen for good rust resistance and persistence
  • Contains DONATA Cocksfoot, a soft leaved variety that offers persistence and is more palatable than some leading Perennial Ryegrass varieties
  • Now includes FOJTAN festulolium. This new species is very drought tolerant and combines excellent yield with palatability and disease resistance

Overseeding & Renovation

Large seeded, aggressive species are essential for overseeding to succeed.

Typhoon - Overseeding Mix

Large seeded, aggressive species are essential for overseeding to succeed.

Ideal for surface or slot seeding, the components involved are primarily Hybrid and Tetraploid Ryegrasses to facilitate rapid establishment and accelerated growth.

  • Dedicated mix for specific purpose
  • Cost effective and productive
  • There is great interest in using specific mixtures to overseed pasture in order to boost production. This avoids the cost of conventional cultivation and re-seeding and is an excellent solution where shallow soils or stony conditions prevent traditional sowing. Oliver Seeds publish guidelines on several methods available for your use; copies of these guidelines are available on request.

Equine Grass Mixes

HorseMax - Paddock Mix

Long term horse grazing with an option to produce a quality hay crop.

HorseMax Paddock is designed using diploid Perennial Ryegrasses, Timothy and Creeping Red Fescue. Sward density is a key consideration as both grazing and winter feed are often produced from the same area. Timothy is much favoured by horses and in particular gives hay a sweet smell and is very palatable. Creeping Red Fescue is key to keeping the sward together and because of its growth habit quickly repairs the turf when damaged by the hooves.

  • Very good sward density
  • Suitable for a hay crop if desired
  • Hard wearing sward
  • No tetraploids as high sugar grass can lead to laminitis
  • An extremely versatile equine mixture

Sowing Rate 14 to 16 kg/acre
Pack Size 10kg

Horse Herb Grazing Mix
